Father of shot young man contests police: 'He was wearing a helmet, which is now at home with the bullet hole'

extra15 September 2026 at 10:00

The pizzaiolo Danilo Jander Francisco Alves, 26 years old, was shot in the head by military police in Niterói on Saturday at 5:47 PM. The young man was riding his motorcycle to work along Rua Mariz e Barros, in Icaraí, when he was approached by the officers. The victim's father contests the police version, stating that Danilo was wearing a helmet, which is now at home with the bullet hole in it.

Footage from a security camera obtained by GLOBO shows the moment of the incident. In the footage, three motorcycles appear in slow-moving traffic: Danilo was riding the first motorcycle, while two military police officers rode alongside him right behind. What happens from there lasts only five seconds.

According to a witness account, Danilo was stopped and had his hands raised when the shot was fired. The video shows that Danilo slowed down, the officers approached, the first police officer sprayed a jet of pepper spray at the motorcyclist, and almost immediately, the second one fired the shot. Danilo fell from his motorcycle, shot.

About 20 minutes after the shooting, while onlookers were gathering at the scene, a fire department team arrived at the location. The approach would also have been at close range, according to other information released about the case.

Why this matters

Residents of Niterói and the surrounding area who are witnesses or victims of police violence may be directly affected by this case, as it raises serious concerns about police conduct during traffic stops. The incident has sparked public debate about the use of force by military police in the city, and the family is contesting the official version of events, seeking accountability.
