European Vega-C rocket successfully places two Earth observation satellites into orbit

oglobo15 September 2026 at 09:35

The European Vega-C rocket successfully placed the Sentinel-3C and Flex satellites into orbit, designed to expand the observation of extreme phenomena related to climate change. The two equipment were launched Monday night from the Kourou space center in French Guiana, and reached a sun-synchronous orbit nearly two hours later.

The takeoff occurred at 10:21 PM Monday local time, 1:21 AM GMT Tuesday, and was accompanied by an AFP correspondent. The flight was operated by the Italian company Avio, in its second launch of the year from the European space center located on the American continent.

The Flex satellite was developed to measure the response of plants to heat, while the Sentinel-3C will also contribute to environmental monitoring. Both were developed by Thales Alenia Space for the European Space Agency (ESA).

Why this matters

The successful launch represents an advance in European climate monitoring capability, allowing more precise observation of extreme phenomena. The data collected by the satellites may benefit researchers and environmental authorities around the world, including Portugal and Brazil, in tracking the effects of climate change.
