Sexual deepfakes target almost 150 European politicians. Almost all are women

ZAP Notícias15 September 2026 at 09:20

Almost 150 politicians from across Europe have been included on harmful deepfake pornography sites in recent years, according to an investigation to which Wired had access. An analysis of 160 deepfake sites reveals that politicians from 22 countries appear on them.

Nearly all are women. The vast majority of victims are female politicians whose faces were used in explicit videos without their consent.

Some of these politicians have their names and photographs listed on disturbing, database-style profiles that may link to deepfake creation tools, indicating an organized and systematic level of abuse.

The analysis of around 160 domains hosting deepfake abuse was conducted as part of the investigation that exposed this network of digital violence against European public figures.

Why this matters

European politicians, particularly women, face a growing threat to their online safety and dignity. The fact that names and photographs are listed in databases indicates that these tools can be used to create more deepfakes in the future. This investigation comes amid the rapid expansion and accessibility of AI technologies capable of manipulating images and videos.
