MEO, the Portuguese national operator, claims to have been the target of a "massive attack" that caused congestion on its international network on Monday. The company states it suffered an overload caused by malicious traffic directed at its systems.
However, independent analysts contest this version of events. These specialists base their analysis on data collected by Cloudflare Radar and IPinfo, network traffic monitoring services, to suggest an alternative explanation for the failure.
According to data from these network analysis services, the problem was not a deliberate attack, but rather a BGP "route leak" involving Ghana Telecom. This type of incident occurs when network routes are incorrectly propagated, causing traffic to be inadequately redirected through unauthorized providers.
The discrepancy between MEO's narrative and the technical evidence from monitoring services raises questions about the exact nature of the incident that affected the Portuguese operator's international services.
