EU Digital Identity Wallet: what it is and how it works

Euronews Portugal15 September 2026 at 09:30

By 2026, the European Union countries are obligated to launch national digital wallets as part of the European Digital Identity. These wallets will allow citizens to store and manage identification documents and other personal data digitally and securely.

Italy, France and Finland are the countries that are already advancing with the implementation of their digital wallets. The remaining member countries are in different phases of system development.

The European Digital Identity aims to provide citizens with a secure and standardized way to access public and private services throughout the European Union, eliminating the need for multiple digital identifiers. The regulation establishing this framework was approved to guarantee interoperability between the different member states.

Why this matters

Readers have until 2026 to prepare for the new European digital identity, which will affect the way they interact with public and private services in other EU countries. The state of advancement of pilot projects in Italy, France and Finland can serve as an indicator of what to expect in the remaining member countries.
