IN AFRICA, ANGOLA IS THE SECOND COUNTRY WITH MOST MPOX CASES

Folha 815 September 2026 at 09:07

Angola recorded 184 cases of mpox between July 6 and August 16, bringing the cumulative total of infections to 274 and one death, according to the World Health Organization.

According to the latest WHO report on the multinational mpox outbreak, Angola is the second country with the most cases in Africa, having been surpassed only by Madagascar, which recorded 785 cases in that period.

Angola ranked ahead of other African countries, including Kenya with 94 cases, the Democratic Republic of Congo with 41 cases and Cameroon with 28 cases, in the same time interval.

Why this matters

Angola faces a significant mpox outbreak with the second highest number of cases on the continent, which represents a threat to national public health. The Angolan population faces direct risks of contagion, while health authorities need to respond to a situation that has already resulted in death. The WHO report positions Angola as one of the epicenters of the disease in Africa, second only to Madagascar.
