Agência ECCLESIA15 September 2026 at 09:01

The Archdiocese of Braga and the Alexandrina Foundation of Balasar are holding a press conference today to present the main moments of the dedication of the new Eucharistic Sanctuary of Balasar. The initiative takes place at 10:00 in the Mariano Pinho Room, located in front of the House of Blessed Alexandrina, in Balasar.

During the conference, two central moments will be presented: the Transfer of the mortal remains of Blessed Alexandrina from the parish church of Balasar to the new Sanctuary, on October 10 at 10:00, and the Dedication of the church and altar of the Eucharistic Sanctuary of Balasar, on October 11 at 16:00.

According to the note sent to the ECCLESIA Agency, the spiritual and ecclesial significance of these events, the development of the construction works, and the planned organization for welcoming pilgrims and media outlets will also be discussed.

The conference features the presence of D. José Manuel Garcia Cordeiro, Metropolitan Archbishop of Braga, of monsignor Manuel Casado Neiva, rector of the Eucharistic Sanctuary of Balasar and president of the Alexandrina Foundation of Balasar, of Andrea Silva, president of the Municipal Chamber of Póvoa de Varzim, of Marco Silva, president of the Parish Council of Balasar, of Avelino Reis, member of the Alexandrina Foundation of Balasar, and of Sister Emília Almeida, animator and promoter of the Cause of Canonization of Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa.

Why this matters

The faithful of the region of Braga and Póvoa de Varzim now have a new sanctuary for pilgrimages and religious celebrations. The event marks the transfer of the mortal remains of an important local religious figure, Blessed Alexandrina, to a space dedicated to Eucharistic worship. The local community can expect an increase in pilgrims and media attention during the October events.
