Heavy vehicles without destination to Porto or Gaia banned on VCI from this Tuesday

SAPO Notícias15 September 2026 at 08:21

From this Tuesday, heavy vehicles without destination to Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia are banned from circulating on VCI (Via de Cintura Interna). This measure was implemented with the aim of trying to reduce the traffic problems that affect this arterial road that crosses the city of Porto.

The mayor of Porto publicly acknowledged that this ban "will not solve the traffic problem on VCI". However, he stated that the measure may represent "a turning point" in traffic management on that road.

VCI is one of the main access and crossing roads of the city, frequently congested, especially during peak hours. The circulation of through heavy vehicles has been pointed out as one of the factors contributing to the degradation of traffic conditions on the road.

The ban specifically applies to heavy vehicles that do not have as a destination either of the two cities crossed by VCI, namely Porto or Vila Nova de Gaia. These vehicles must now use alternative routes to cross the region.

Why this matters

Heavy vehicle drivers and logistics companies crossing the region will have to plan alternative routes, affecting travel times and operational costs. The measure comes as a result of chronic congestion problems on VCI and represents an attempt by the municipalities of Porto and Gaia to relieve traffic on one of the main arteries of the city.
