The Castle of Trancoso

Observador15 September 2026 at 06:25

The Castle of Trancoso is an ancient Portuguese fortification that includes a tower dating from the 10th century, revealing origins much earlier than its late medieval configuration. Its history records Almansor's campaign, the Muslim military leader who played a significant role on the Iberian Peninsula during the period of expansion of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba.

The Gothic castle, built in the 13th century, represents one of the most important phases of the fortification, corresponding to the period of consolidation of Christian power in the region after the Reconquista. This defensive structure was fundamental for the control of the territory in central Portugal.

The fortress was also used during the 1800s period, that is, in the 19th century, maintaining its strategic relevance throughout the centuries. This continuous use demonstrates the military and symbolic importance of the castle for the Portuguese authorities across different historical periods.

The restoration carried out by the Estado Novo preserved this architectural heritage, contributing to the maintenance of a structure that witnessed centuries of Portuguese history, from the Muslim period to the 20th century.
