Scammers deceive MEO customers

Correio da Manhã15 September 2026 at 01:30

A group of scammers managed to deceive MEO customers, a Portuguese telecommunications operator. The criminals gained fraudulent access to customer accounts or data to carry out operations in their names.

In total, 82 customers were victims of this scam. The scammers used the identity and data of these customers to finalize their fraudulent transactions with the operator.

With access to the deceived customers' accounts, the criminals purchased several top-of-the-line smartphones. These high-value devices were acquired without the knowledge or consent of the legitimate account holders.

The scheme allowed the scammers to obtain cutting-edge smartphones, causing losses to both the operator and the customers who saw their accounts used improperly for these unauthorized purchases.

Why this matters

The 82 affected customers may face financial and identity problems. The case alerts to the need for vigilance among telecommunications consumers. The investigation aims to identify how the scammers obtained customers' personal data to carry out the purchases.
