The crash-for-cash scam has arrived in Madeira!

Madeira Opina15 September 2026 at 02:58

The crash-for-cash scam has arrived in Madeira, according to an alert directed at all drivers. The scheme involves a vehicle that drives around the São Martinho area and deliberately causes minor accidents, causing rear-end collisions.

The method used consists of driving with the rear bumper already damaged and braking suddenly so that other drivers crash into the vehicle. After the accident, the person involved asks for a payment of between 50 to 100 euros, stating that it is not necessary to call the Police or fill out the accident report form with the insurance company.

The situation was brought to the attention of the article's author, although it awaits confirmation. The alert recommends that, in case of an accident, drivers stay calm and always fill out the civil liability form, even when the damage seems trivial.

If the other party refuses to cooperate, the advice is to call the emergency number 112, so that the PSP can take charge of the incident.

Why this matters

Madeiran drivers are directly affected by this fraudulent scheme that aims to extort money through deliberately caused accidents. The situation follows an alert that lacks police confirmation, but serves as a warning for all drivers in the region to stay calm in case of a collision and always fill out the civil liability form, avoiding direct payments.
