Odemira Library "reopened" after renovation works

Correio Alentejo15 September 2026 at 01:00

The José Saramago Municipal Library in Odemira reopened on September 5th, on its 26th anniversary, after being closed for about a year for rehabilitation works and energy efficiency improvements. The renovation represented an investment of around 500 thousand euros, funded by the Alentejo 2030 program, promoted by the Odemira municipality.

The mayor of Odemira, Hélder Guerreiro, considered the intervention "absolutely fundamental" to provide better working conditions for staff and greater comfort for users. The work allowed for the creation of differentiated spaces and improved the interior conditions of the space.

The "new" Municipal Library will see its staff reinforced, enabling it to operate for more hours throughout the day. According to the mayor, from January 2027, with the hiring and training of new employees, it will be possible to implement this extension of operating hours.

For Hélder Guerreiro, the Municipal Library is "one of the most emblematic spaces" for the promotion of books, reading, education, and culture in the municipality, considering that its reopening returns to the community a space where people can find wisdom, knowledge, and access to information.

Why this matters

Odemira residents now have access to a renovated municipal library with improved comfort and service conditions. The 500 thousand euro investment aims to promote culture and reading in the municipality, and the hiring of new staff from 2027 will allow for extended operating hours, benefiting all users.
