The number of rented households in Brazil grew 54.1% between 2016 and 2025, reaching 18.9 million, the highest level in the historical series of Continuous PNAD, an IBGE survey. Currently, nearly one in four Brazilian households is rented. This growth exceeds that recorded among owned properties still being paid for, which grew 31% in the period, and among those already paid off, with an increase of 7.3%.
High interest rates, more expensive credit, and difficulty accessing real estate financing help explain this shift in the Brazilian housing profile. With the growth of the rental market, doubts about the rights and duties of property owners and tenants are also increasing.
