Around a hundred people protested today against the location in the municipality of Alenquer, in the district of Lisbon, of a unit for transforming agricultural effluents into natural gas and agricultural biofertilizer. The protest brought together residents and representatives of the local community who oppose the installation of the project in the region.
The unit in question aims to convert agricultural effluents into renewable natural gas, known as biomethane, and into agricultural biofertilizer. The project represents an investment in the renewable energy sector and the circular economy in the agricultural sector.
The project is currently in the public consultation phase, which means that citizens have the opportunity to submit oppositions and concerns regarding the location and impact of the installation. This public consultation phase is a standard procedure in larger-scale projects.
The demonstrators argue that the chosen location is not suitable to accommodate this type of installation, expressing concerns of an environmental nature and regarding the quality of life in the region. The Alenquer town council is monitoring the process and the positions of the local residents.
