Of Portuguese exports to Mercosur, 94.9% are destined for Brazil, making the South American country Portugal's main trading partner within the bloc. This strong reliance on the Brazilian market led Portugal to seek to diversify its export destinations.
With the trade agreement concluded between the European Union and Mercosur, Portugal saw an opportunity to expand its sales to the remaining countries of the South American bloc. The Portuguese government expressed interest in exploring new trade opportunities in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Brazil continues to be considered a strategic market for Portugal, but the agreement opens new perspectives for Portuguese exporters in the other three Mercosur members, allowing them to reduce the concentration of sales in a single country.
