TST determines that Correios workers maintain 80% of staff during strike

oglobo14 September 2026 at 17:14

The Superior Labor Court partially granted a request from Correios and declared the workers' strike abusive, determining that unions maintain 80% of staff active during the strike period. The decision covers all service, treatment, transportation, and distribution units, as well as administrative or support areas indispensable to the continuity of the postal chain.

The TST determination establishes that the 80% percentage must be measured individually in each covered unit, with compensation of excess attendance between units, shifts, or different activities being prohibited. This means that each workplace must comply with the rule independently.

Correios filed the action requesting, on an urgent basis, that the court declare the strike abusive and simultaneously open collective bargaining, given the lack of agreement between the company and workers on the salary adjustment.

The collective bargaining judgment is scheduled for September 21 at 1:30 PM, and until that date the parties still have the possibility to negotiate an agreement and avoid the judicial decision on the course of the strike.

Why this matters

The TST decision directly affects Correios workers, who may face disciplinary sanctions if they do not comply with the determination to maintain 80% of staff. Postal service users are also impacted, as the maintenance of essential services is guaranteed during the strike period. The ruling establishes a precedent for conducting strikes in essential public services while the collective bargaining is not judged.
