Confraria dos Sabores Poveiros aims to promote fish caldeirada and strengthen national presence

Mais Semanário14 September 2026 at 17:23

Confraria dos Sabores Poveiros attended the Póvoa ao Ar Livre event for the first time on September 4th and 5th, at the tent installed during the summer near the Lota Auditorium. The invitation was extended by the mayor of the City Council, Andrea Silva, and was promptly accepted by the board and the confrères.

Rodrigo Moça, president of the Confraria, explained that the team presented sardine rice, a replica of the one that was prepared several years ago and became known as the world's largest sardine rice. During the event, fish soups were also served, with the feedback considered excellent.

The leader highlighted the commitment of the team involved in the initiative and considered that the participation constituted an important opportunity to promote Póvoa's gastronomic identity among residents and visitors. The confraria's mission is precisely to preserve and promote the traditional flavors of Póvoa de Varzim, showcasing emblematic dishes such as pescada à poveira, rabanada à poveira, cambitos de raia, tapas de sardinha com coração-de-boi, fish soup, and, more recently, sardine rice.

This content was published in the September 9th edition of the newspaper MAIS/Semanário, available in print or in digital PDF format.

Why this matters

Residents of Póvoa de Varzim directly benefit from the promotion of their traditional dishes, which can attract more visitors and strengthen local gastronomic identity. The confraria now intends to extend its visibility nationwide, which could have an economic impact for the region through gastronomic tourism.
