The President of the Portuguese Republic, António José Seguro, will travel to the Vatican between September 23 and 24 for a meeting with Pope Leo XIV. The head of state sent letters to the Assembly of the Republic requesting assent for these visits abroad.
On the same trip, António José Seguro will also travel to the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg, between September 29 and 30, on the occasion of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Portugal's accession to this organization.
The President of the Republic took the opportunity to invite the Pope to visit Portugal in 2027, a year in which the 500th anniversary of the formalization of the apostolic nunciature in Portugal, the 110th anniversary of the Marian apparitions in Fátima, and the 10th anniversary of the canonization of Francisco and Jacinta are commemorated.
António José Seguro stated that the diplomatic relations between Portugal and the Holy See constitute "an example of institutional dialogue, mutual respect, and historical cooperation," and considered that the visit of His Holiness would constitute an opportunity to deepen the relationship between the Portuguese State and the Holy See.
