Wage increases in banking: institutions maintain 2% proposal and close negotiations unilaterally

SAPO Notícias14 September 2026 at 16:08

Credit institutions announced, at the meeting on September 11, the decision to maintain the 2% salary increase proposal and to unilaterally close negotiations. This position was communicated to UGT banking unions during the meeting.

The UGT banking unions reacted to this decision, expressing their dissatisfaction with how the negotiations were conducted and closed by the employers. UGT represents a significant portion of banking sector workers in Portugal.

The 2% proposal presented by credit institutions thus remains unchanged, without any flexibility to accommodate workers' claims. This percentage had been considered insufficient by the unions from the start of negotiations.

With the unilateral closure of negotiations by the institutions, the social dialogue process in the banking sector was suspended, leaving the salary demands of banking workers pending.

Why this matters

Banking sector workers in Portugal face an impasse in salary negotiations, with institutions imposing a maximum 2% increase without room for discussion. This unilateral decision directly affects the purchasing power of thousands of bank employees, who consider the proposal insufficient given the current cost of living. The unions are thus left without room for maneuver to try to obtain better conditions for their members.
