A Trade Union Federation warned of the inability to replace teachers who will retire in the coming years. In the 2024/25 school year, approximately 122,000 teachers were in service in Portugal.
Estimates cited by the union indicate that 37% of this teaching workforce will leave service by 2034, representing a significant departure of professionals from the sector.
The warning comes in a context of discussion about the difficulties in hiring teachers and working conditions in the teaching profession. The trade union federation draws attention to the need to address this demographic challenge in the education sector.
