Finance Minister Dario Durigan defended that the Brazilian state should not be big nor small, but have a size that responds to society's needs. The speech was made by videoconference during the 4th edition of the Brasil Hoje Seminar, held in São Paulo by Grupo Esfera.
Durigan acknowledged that this position goes against what the business community and financial markets think, who prefer a smaller state. The minister stated that policy should not be guided by "rigid models" in defining the size of the state.
The minister listed sectors that demand state responses, such as public security, basic sanitation, urban infrastructure, and public transportation. However, Durigan acknowledged that the solution to these bottlenecks will not come exclusively from the public sector.
According to the minister, direct integration between the state and the private sector is necessary to face the challenges in these areas. The 2027 Budget should record lower growth in mandatory spending, as Durigan indicated.
