CDS calls for consensus between authorities and fishermen in Caniçal

dnoticias.pt14 September 2026 at 15:27

CDS-PP Machico expressed, this Monday, concern regarding the seizure of dried fish in Caniçal. Through a press release, the party called on authorities to act with understanding and common sense in applying the rules and legislation.

The party stressed that the fishing sector is going through a particularly demanding phase, marked by the decrease in fish and the resulting drop in fishermen's revenue. This situation places additional difficulties on the sector's professionals.

CDS-PP Machico advocated the need to find a consensus between authorities and fishermen, in order to avoid conflicts that could further worsen the already difficult situation the sector faces. The press release did not specify which legislation was at stake nor the specific reasons for the seizure.

Why this matters

The fishermen of Caniçal face a dual pressure: on the one hand, the reduction in catches and revenue, and on the other, the strict application of rules that led to the seizure of dried fish. CDS-PP Machico intervenes as a political intermediary, asking authorities to consider the difficult economic context of the sector before applying sanctions.

Court gives reason to Passinha residents: Alenquer City Hall has 10 days to ban trucks at night

The Administrative Court of Lisbon Circle gave reason to the residents of Rua dos Bons Amigos, in Passinha, in Alenquer, condemning the City Council to prohibit the circulation of heavy vehicles during the nighttime period within 10 days. The sentence considers it proven that more than 300 trucks cross that street daily to access the Santos e Vale logistics center, a number much higher than the 26 vehicles estimated in the 2016 traffic study. The court found the damages to homes and health effects on residents, including sleep deprivation, to be demonstrated, and considered that the municipality never monitored traffic nor took measures to limit circulation. The total ban was not ordered because no alternative route was proven to exist, but the mayor, João Nicolau, may be personally condemned to daily fines if he does not comply with the decision. The municipality and Santos e Vale were also condemned to pay the costs of the process and may appeal.
