Needles shared during science fair at school in Rio; health team to be sent to the unit

cbn14 September 2026 at 14:12

The Rio de Janeiro City Hall sent a health team to Colégio Tamandaré, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, on Monday (14th) after a lancet was shared during a science fair. The instrument was used to prick students' fingers during blood glucose tests conducted at a student's booth. The team from the Harvey Ribeiro de Souza Filho Municipal Health Center remained at the facility from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The health professionals clarified doubts, guided families, and identified people who had not yet sought medical care. No tests or medication administration took place at the school.

By late Sunday afternoon, 23 people had sought care for evaluation and prophylactic treatment. According to Hospital Lourenço Jorge, 20 were treated at the facility, while the school reported that another three sought care in the private network.

Health authorities recommend that all people who had contact with the shared lancet seek medical care for evaluation and possible prophylactic treatment.

Why this matters

Students and family members from Colégio Tamandaré in Recreio dos Bandeirantes must seek medical care for evaluation after exposure to a shared lancet during the science fair, with risk of blood-borne disease transmission. The municipal health team is available at the school for guidance, but no tests will be conducted on site.
