France, Italy, and Seven Other EU Countries Postpone Adoption of Fingerprint Collection System for Foreigners

Nine countries of the European Union, including France, Italy, Greece and Portugal, announced the postponement of the introduction of fingerprint collection for non-European citizens. Germany, Malta, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium also requested an extension of the deadline, stating they needed more time to implement the new border controls at busy airports of the bloc.

The Entry/Exit System, called EES, was supposed to take effect on September 6. It has been postponed several times to avoid crowds of visitors at major events, including the 2024 Olympics held in Paris.

Spain, which faced initial problems with the system, is implementing the EES in full. The EES, adopted by the EU in 2017, was officially launched last October and was supposed to be fully operational in April, but initial problems led to a new postponement for Member States.

So far, approximately 200 million registrations and 70 million border crossings have been made since the system's launch, according to the data available in the article.
