A 15-year-old teenager, identified as Derek Parker Aghnaanga, was rescued after surviving three days clinging to an overturned boat off the coast of Alaska, in the United States. He was flounder fishing with his brother and cousin when the vessel capsized near St. Lawrence Island, in the Bering Sea, on September 4. Derek was the only survivor of the tragedy.
Upon being rescued by a fishing boat called Northwest Explorer, the teenager told Captain Adam White that his brother's body was still trapped under the overturned vessel. He also reported that the cousin had slipped off the top of the boat the night before the rescue, contributing to the group's loss.
The Coast Guard spotted the teenager clinging to the overturned boat around 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 7. The rescue was made possible after the Alaska State Police reported the previous night that the group had not returned home, leading authorities to be alerted to search for the fishermen.
