Premieres, tradition and contemporary creation at the Querença Puppet Festival

Jornal do Algarve14 September 2026 at 12:40

The 2nd edition of the Puppet Festival takes place in Querença on September 25, 26 and 27, with a programme that includes performances, meetings and workshops. The festival features two premieres: Gustavo Núñez "Tuti" from Argentina presents «A Boy with a Giant Heart», a creation inspired by his own life story, and Associação Picada Cultural brings to the stage «The Diabolical Barber», a performance starring Adriana Pereira, considered the only female puppeteer of Dom Roberto Theatre currently active in the Algarve.

The programme also includes the company S.A. Marionetas, which presents a documentary and a new creation about «The Marquis of Pombal and the Jesuits», and the company of Rui Queiroz de Matos, which brings two proposals inspired by literary classics and leads a puppet manipulation workshop. The festival also includes activities directed at Querença Primary School and the local elderly care home.

Until the end of November, there is also an exhibition of puppets by Jorge Cerqueira on display at the Fundação Manuel Viegas Guerreiro. The event was organized by Associação Picada Cultural, with artistic direction by Jeannine Trévidic, with support from Loulé Municipality, Querença Parish Council, Fundação Manuel Viegas Guerreiro and QRER – Cooperative for the Development of Low Density Territories.

Why this matters

The festival brings a diverse cultural programme to the Algarve, including international and regional premieres, offering free or affordable performances and workshops for families and elderly people, while also animating the small locality of Querença with cultural activities over the weekend. The presence of puppeteers from Argentina and the Algarve can attract visitors and promote the territory as a destination for art and tradition.
