Portugal may need nearly 39 thousand new teachers by 2035, according to a study by the National Federation of Teachers (FNE). The organization mapped in detail the needs for teachers in the Portuguese education system for the coming years.
More than half of the teacher needs are concentrated in lower secondary and upper secondary education. These education levels thus represent the greatest pressure on the teacher recruitment system.
The FNE study comes in a context of continuous warnings about difficulties in hiring and retaining teachers in Portuguese schools. The federation has been advocating for measures to attract and keep teachers in the profession.
