Belgium has implemented a new rule requiring beer manufacturers to include on their products the warning that "alcohol is harmful to health". This measure is part of a broader public health initiative to alert consumers about the risks associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
The Belgian brewing sector reacted quickly to this measure. In an open letter sent to the country's press, manufacturers challenged the mandatory message, arguing that moderate alcohol consumption cannot be equated with excessive consumption.
According to producers, the message imposed by the government does not make this important distinction, which they consider an unfair generalization. The sector argues that moderation should be recognized as a distinct and responsible practice.
The brewing sector's challenge comes at a time when Belgian authorities intend to strengthen awareness of the negative effects of alcohol on health, in a trend that has been adopted by several European countries.
