Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, announced proposed legislation to hold artificial intelligence companies criminally liable when their AI systems participate in or facilitate crimes. The measure would reach companies with control over the development, training, and deployment of AI systems, potentially resulting in steep fines, compensation to victims, court oversight, and in the most serious cases, suspension of operations in the state. The proposal comes amid an investigation into ChatGPT related to the shooting attack at Florida State University in 2025, which left two people dead and five injured. The state has also expressed concern about AI-generated scams and child sexual abuse material generated by artificial intelligence. The legislation has not yet been passed and is expected to be discussed during the regular legislative session in March.
