Portugal may need nearly 39,000 new teachers by 2035, according to a study conducted by the National Federation of Teachers (FNE). The map prepared by the union federation identifies the future needs for teachers in the Portuguese education system.
More than half of the teacher needs are concentrated in lower secondary education and upper secondary education. These are the areas where the greatest shortage of teachers is anticipated in the coming decades.
The study comes in a context of alert about the difficulty in attracting and retaining teachers in the teaching profession. The FNE uses these data to alert the government to the need for planning and investment in teacher training and conditions.
