Gonçalo Lobo Xavier, director-general of the Portuguese Association of Distribution Companies, warned that the increase in fuel prices will have an impact on food prices in supermarkets, namely on meat and eggs. The official added that this reflection on prices will only begin to be felt in about a month.
According to the director of APED, the rise in fuel prices translates into growing transportation costs, which ultimately reflects on the final bill at the supermarket for the consumer. This chain effect causes products to arrive on shelves at higher prices.
Lobo Xavier also commented on the public support being considered by the Government to address this situation. The official argues that this support could be directed immediately to farmers, rather than to other measures that are being considered.
