The British multinational Lightsource BP decided to abandon the Mega Central Solar project in Beira, which was planned to be built in the municipalities of Castelo Branco and Idanha-a-Nova. The decision was announced by the company responsible for developing the project.
This withdrawal comes after opposition from environmentalists and local organizations who criticized the project's impact on the region. Environmental activists congratulated themselves on the decision, considering it a half victory in the fight for the protection of the landscape and territory.
Despite the abandonment of the Mega Central Solar in Beira, the Sophia solar central, which is also being developed by Lightsource BP, remains standing and operational in the municipalities of Idanha-a-Nova and Penamacor, thus maintaining the company's presence in the region.
