Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease that goes far beyond the visible symptoms on the body's surface. The Portuguese Association of Patients with Atopic Dermatitis (ADERMAP) warned that the disease can have profound impacts on various areas of patients' lives.
Atopic dermatitis can significantly affect patients' sleep, causing insomnia. Beyond sleep problems, the disease is also associated with mental health issues, including depression. This chronic condition can also lead to social isolation of patients.
The impact of atopic dermatitis also extends to patients' academic and professional lives. The disease can affect performance at school and work, in addition to having consequences on the financial situation of patients and their families.
ADERMAP advocates for the need to recognize these less visible impacts of atopic dermatitis and warns about the importance of ensuring a more tailored health response to the real needs of patients and their families.
