"Modern Architecture": Olhão Markets Enter the New 7 Wonders of Portugal

Postal do Algarve14 September 2026 at 09:38

The Municipal Markets of Olhão were elected one of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal, in the "Modern Architecture" category, following the final voting held on Saturday night, September 12, at the Grand Final held in Sintra and broadcast by TVI.

This is the third recognition achieved by Olhão in the official 7 Wonders of Portugal contest. In 2019, Olhão's Folar won the 7 Sweet Wonders of Portugal and, in 2010, Ria Formosa was distinguished as one of the 7 Natural Wonders of Portugal.

Built between 1912 and 1916, the Municipal Markets of Olhão are pointed out as a relevant example of iron and glass architecture from the early 20th century. The metal structure, the exposed brick and the organization in two longitudinal bodies give the complex its own architectural identity, associated with the urban and commercial needs of the time.

Rehabilitated at the end of the 20th century, the buildings maintain the integrity of the original design, continuing to affirm themselves as a reference of Portuguese architecture and as one of the most recognized elements of Olhão's waterfront.

Why this matters

Readers in the Algarve region benefit from this recognition that values local architectural heritage and can boost tourism in Olhão. This is the third award the region receives in the 7 Wonders contest, consolidating the area as a destination of cultural and architectural interest in Portugal.
