The Portuguese footwear sector is in a process of reinvention, but remains vigilant facing a context described as of "great pressure". The national industry faces challenges that force it to continuously adapt to the demands of the global market.
The composition of Portuguese footwear exports has undergone significant changes over the past three years. The weight of leather footwear in exports fell from 69% to 58%, a decline that reflects changes in consumption patterns and international competitiveness.
Conversely, rubber and plastic products increased their share in exports from 13% to 21%. Textile products also recorded growth, rising from 8% to 12% in the same period, indicating a diversification of the Portuguese offer in the sector.
These statistics reveal a transformation in the productive structure of footwear in Portugal, with the country betting on alternative segments to traditional leather, adapting to new market trends and the competitive pressures it faces.
