School year starts with teacher shortages and students without a place

DianaFM14 September 2026 at 09:27

The basic education school year began this Monday marked by recurring problems in the Portuguese education system, with a lack of teachers and thousands of students still without a confirmed place. The start of classes exposes weaknesses that were already known and persist from year to year.

According to José Feliciano Costa, secretary-general of Fenprof, more than 100 thousand students begin the year without at least one assigned teacher. Among these are four thousand primary school children who still do not have a confirmed teacher for their classes.

Although approximately 20 thousand teacher placements have been made, many positions remain unfilled in several schools. This situation worsens the shortage of teaching staff and compromises the normal functioning of classes from the very first day of the school year.

Why this matters

Readers in Portugal are directly affected by these failures at the start of the school year, with families facing the uncertainty of whether their children will have a teacher for all subjects. The situation reflects structural problems in the public education system that repeat annually, raising questions about the Education Ministry's ability to guarantee a start to the school year without disruptions.

The participatory dimension of the Sustainable Mobility Plan (PMUS) for Leiria

This is an opinion on the participatory dimension of Leiria's Sustainable Mobility Plan (PMUS). The author expresses sadness, but not surprise, at the distortions and superficial analyses of mobility principles circulating in conversations and on social media. They argue that this inability to think systemically reinforces what is already known from research in this field and from planning territorial realities in general.
