The British multinational behind the Sophia photovoltaic solar plant has reduced the installed capacity of the project by 34% in the redesign it will submit to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) authority by October 2. The capacity dropped from 867MWp (Megawatt peak) to approximately 573MWp.
The capacity reduction comes in a context of changes to the original project. This redesign will be presented to the competent authority for environmental assessment within the established deadline.
The Sophia project is located in Castelo Branco and represents a significant investment in the renewable energy sector in Portugal. The photovoltaic solar plant had initially been planned with a capacity higher than what is now proposed.
The submission of the redesigned study to the EIA marks a new phase in the licensing process for the solar plant, which will now have a considerably smaller footprint than originally planned.
