A new carbon market regime for the construction and transport sectors has entered into force, placing a price on greenhouse gas emissions associated with fuels used in these sectors. This measure is part of the broader framework of European Union climate policies to reduce carbon emissions.
The regime specifically covers fossil fuels used in buildings and road transport, sectors traditionally difficult to decarbonize. From now on, these sectors are integrated into the emissions trading system.
The new market should be fully operational by 2028, when the carbon pricing mechanisms will be fully implemented and operational. Until then, a transition and adaptation phase is planned for the economic operators involved.
The responsibility for purchasing allowances lies with fuel suppliers, who must ensure that the products they place on the market reflect the cost of carbon emissions associated with their end use.
