Taiwan's Vice President, Hsiao Bi-khim, said that Taiwan deserves to have its "own voice" and "be respected" on the international stage. This statement came after her return from a visit to Italy.
Hsiao Bi-khim's visit to Italy provoked strong protests from China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory and opposes any official contact between countries and Taiwanese authorities.
The vice president's statements reflect Taiwan's usual position of seeking greater international recognition, in a context where Beijing tries to diplomatically isolate the island.
