Avocado peels, coffee grounds and potato processing waste can be transformed into coatings for paper packaging, replacing fossil-based plastics. This is the proposal of the BIOCOATING project, developed at the University of Aveiro.
The project aims to give a new destination to these organic residues, converting them into bioplastics capable of coating paper packaging. In this way, it aims to reduce dependence on plastics derived from fossil fuels.
In addition to functioning as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics, the coatings developed by BIOCOATING provide antioxidant and UV protection properties to the packaging. These characteristics are relevant for food preservation, helping to extend their durability.
