Immigrants in Portugal are speaking about an atmosphere of fear and growing insecurity in the country. The situation has generated concern among immigrant communities who feel increasingly vulnerable.
The Public Security Police (PSP) rejects that a hunt for illegal immigrants is occurring in Portugal. Police authorities guarantee that there is no type of targeted persecution against this population.
However, the Cape Verdean Association in Lisbon contradicts this PSP position. The association states that an atmosphere of fear and insecurity is taking hold among immigrants, particularly within the Cape Verdean community.
The association also understands that the PSP was not sufficiently forceful in denying the alleged persecutions. This lack of clarity on the part of authorities has contributed to the atmosphere of tension currently experienced among immigrants.
