The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, today emphasized the urgent need to end global conflicts during his address at the BRICS summit, held in New Delhi, India. The plenary session, which was the second and final session of the summit, was attended by the leaders of Russia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and China.
Guterres stated that "the world needs peace," referring to multiple conflicts on a global scale. In his words as quoted by the Efe news agency, he specifically mentioned Gaza, the broader crisis in the Middle East, the situation in Ukraine, Sudan and other unspecified conflicts.
This intervention by the UN leader took place in the context of one of the largest international gatherings of the moment, bringing together representatives from emerging economies that represent a significant share of global gross domestic product. The BRICS summit, which also includes Brazil, India, China and South Africa, has been an important forum for discussions on economic cooperation and global geopolitics.
