The Liga dos Bombeiros Portugueses (LBP) warned that fuel increases are compromising the financial sustainability of firefighting corporations in Portugal. The president of the LBP considered that the situation is "financially strangling" the firefighters.
According to data provided by the president of the League, firefighting corporations faced increases of approximately 40% in fuel expenses. This increment represents a significant impact on the budgets of the different corporations across the country.
The most affected sector is non-urgent patient transport, where the situation is considered most worrying. The vehicles dedicated to this service consume large amounts of fuel, making costs especially high in this segment of activity.
The alert comes in a context of generalized increase in fuel prices, which has affected various economic activities and public services in Portugal. The LBP intends to raise awareness among authorities about the need to find solutions that allow firefighting corporations to continue fulfilling their mission.
