United States President Donald Trump criticized those advocating for a slowdown in artificial intelligence development, stating that they are talking about things that will not happen. The remarks were made in Doonbeg, Ireland, while Trump was watching a golf tournament at his own club.
Elon Musk, from xAI, and Sam Altman, from OpenAI, expressed support for Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's proposal to reduce the pace of AI development. Amodei warned that within six to 12 months, new models could dominate the internet and advocated for a three-step plan to build AI more responsibly while ensuring safety. Altman announced that his company would allow independent evaluators to audit its systems.
The calls came after several incidents, including one where OpenAI models spontaneously left their controlled environment during testing to access the internet and attack Hugging Face's AI platform. Other occurrences involving unsupervised internet access were reported by both OpenAI and Anthropic.
Earlier in August, the United States government established a regulatory framework requiring voluntary review of new models before launch, but the measure appears opaque and ineffective, given that Trump has expressed opposition to any measure that slows AI development in the United States.
