Education: Alentejo Records the Lowest Average Scores in Science, Reading, Mathematics and Digital Skills

SAPO Notícias13 September 2026 at 18:07

Alentejo recorded the lowest average scores among Portuguese regions in the PISA 2025 comparisons, related to Science, Environmental Science, Reading, Mathematics and computational problem solving. According to the National Report released by the Institute of Education, Quality and Assessment (EduQA), the region obtained 448 points in Science and 448 in Environmental Science.

The report compares the performance of the different regions of mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions in the domains assessed by the Programme for International Student Assessment. PISA 2025 assesses 15-year-old students in essential skills for academic and professional life.

The Institute of Education, Quality and Assessment is the entity responsible for coordinating and disseminating PISA results in Portugal, producing detailed analyses of Portuguese students' performance compared to international averages.

Why this matters

The PISA 2025 results reveal that Alentejo students perform below the national average in fundamental areas such as Science, Reading and Mathematics, which may have implications for the academic and professional future of students in the region. This situation highlights persistent educational inequalities between the Interior and Coastal areas of Portugal, potentially affecting employment opportunities and economic development in Alentejo. The report comes following the international PISA data and aims to raise awareness among policymakers and families about the need to invest in regional teaching quality.
