In early September, the Hungarian Association of Cemetery Administrators and Maintainers (MTFE) held the tenth edition of the National Grave-Digging Championship, which has existed in the country since 2016. A total of 19 teams of cemetery workers gathered on September 5 for an electrifying dispute over which team would produce the best grave in the best time.
The competition is a strategy by the association to make the profession more visible to the Hungarian population. Despite being considered by many a "dark" or frightening trade, the championship has been engaging industry professionals for years and has become a tradition in the country, attracting curious onlookers, enthusiasts, and admirers of the profession.
The tournament winners received a prize valued at 200,000 Hungarian forints, which corresponds to approximately R$ 3,250. Well beyond speed, competitors must pay attention to the millimeter details of grave construction, demonstrating that the profession requires precision and specific technical skills.
