The Socialist Party accused Chega of presenting a "hoax" with its proposals to reduce the Tax on Petroleum Products (ISP) and VAT on various products. The criticism was made by socialist Eurico Brilhante Dias, who considered that the measures presented by André Ventura's party are inapplicable during the current year.
According to PS, Chega's proposals aim to give a "point of escape" to the Government, meaning they allow the Executive to avoid taking difficult decisions on fiscal matters. The socialists argue that the measures advanced by Chega are not achievable in the short term and that the right-wing party is merely looking for an excuse for the Executive not to act directly.
The PS also demanded direct action from the Executive (Government) instead of solutions that allow the executive to escape its responsibilities. The political tension arises in a context of debate about the cost of living and taxation on fuels and basic food products.
