The lack of hotel capacity on Porto Santo Island worsened the situation, as local hotels were completely full and unable to accommodate passengers affected by cancelled or diverted flights.
Adverse atmospheric conditions, particularly strong winds, appear to have been the main cause of the operational difficulties at Madeira Airport, resulting in this chaotic night that affected hundreds of travelers.
