The deputy national director of the PSP announced that the security force expects to have in 2027 greater capacity to accommodate immigrants in expulsion process. This capacity refers to the centers where immigrants are received during the coercive expulsion process.
The police official emphasized that the coercive process, that is, forced expulsions, always has an associated negative charge. This statement comes in the context of a broader debate about the challenges of migration policies in Portugal.
The deputy director also noted that the success of forced expulsions also depends on the willingness of the country of origin to accept its nationals back. This external factor is considered decisive for the success of expulsion proceedings.
The PSP is the body responsible for executing removal and expulsion measures for immigrants in irregular situations in Portugal, working in coordination with the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), which was abolished in October 2023.
