Iran confirmed it was targeted by an attack on one of its commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The incident occurred at a time of tension in the region and marks a worsening of the security situation in that strategic waterway.
The attack happened on the eve of a scheduled meeting between Iran and Persian Gulf countries, specifically dedicated to the Strait of Hormuz issue. The meeting was planned for Monday and would take place in Oman.
During this meeting, Iran and Gulf countries were to discuss the establishment of provisional and secure maritime routes for commercial traffic. The creation of these alternative routes comes as a response to recent episodes of instability in the region that affect navigation.
